NON-INVASIVE CLUMPING BAMBOO

Now is a perfect time to plant!

5 Gallon size plants $75

These range between 41/2 to 8 1/2 feet tall at present. New shots do not run – they grow tightly around the base of its original canes, thus many people plant them directly in the ground.

Fargesia Scabrida

Clumping Non-invasive Bamboo

Mature Height: 12 to 14 ft. (Less if planted in a container)

Cane Diameter: ½ to ¾ inch USDA Zones 6 – 9 (Hardy to -5˚F)

Fargesia Scabrida is one of the best clumping bamboos for hedges because it is incredibly fast growing and has an upright habit. The leaves are dark green with a graceful, airy arrangement. The canes begin as green shoots, then these green canes gradually age to a deep burgundy red. As the old canes mix with the new, the variation in coloration gives a striking contrast. Scabrida is deer resistant, hardy, and makes a superb privacy screen.

Fargesia Robusta

Clumping Non-invasive Bamboo

Mature Height: 12 to 15 ft. (Less if planted in a container)

Cane Diameter: ¾ to 1 inch USDA Zones 6 – 9 (Hardy to -5˚F)

Fargesia Robusta is a good choice for a clumping bamboo that creates an excellent screen, being taller and more upright than many other clumping types. Robusta is so named because of its robust, yet non-invasive growth habit. Robusta withstands cold winters and windy conditions and is deer resistant. It is evergreen and versatile. It has dark green leaves and light green culms; the new green shoots gradually turn into golden canes, creating an eye-catching combination of colors and texture.

Red Fountain (Also known as Red Dragon)

Clumping Non-invasive Bamboo

Mature Height: 10 to 14 ft. (Average in the Portland area)

Cane Diameter: ½ inch USDA Zones 4 – 9 (Hardy -20˚F to +30˚)

Red Dragon (Red Fountain) is stunning & highly ornamental. Foliage remains dense right to the ground, so it is an excellent hedge and privacy screen. It is a low-maintenance bamboo which can be pruned at any time, if desired. It does best in shade to partial shade. What sets Red Dragon apart is its fine texture, shapely form, and gracefully arching red canes.

Golden Bamboo

Phyllostachys 'aurea' - Also known as Fish Pole Bamboo

Mature Height: 15 - 17 ft. Hardiness: 0°F USDA zones 6 - 11

Golden Bamboo makes a dense hedge right down to the ground. Its stiff, strong, erect, upright canes grow close together, creating a thick privacy screen or hedge. The leaves mature from green to gold in color. Golden Bamboo received its name for the way in which it appears to glow with an inner golden light bursting from within its light green exterior. It warms the garden in winter, and it keeps this evergreen glow down to 0˚F. Golden (Fish Pole) Bamboo is vigorous and robust - one of the strongest and most useful bamboos. It forms a natural looking backdrop or hedge but is also superb as a tub plant.

Black Bamboo

Height: In Portland area usually 25-30 ft. (15-20 ft in containers)

Cane Diameter: to 2 Inches Hardiness: -15°F USDA zones 5 – 10

Black Bamboo makes a tall, upright, and striking evergreen privacy hedge. Its new culms emerge green every spring and gradually turn black over 2 to 3 years. Therefore, there is an attractive contrast of light and dark canes as it matures. Its leaves are slender and dark green. Because Black Bamboo retains its coloration, its established canes make it one of the most prized bamboos for decorative woodworking. The unique combination of colors and textures, along with an ideal size and height makes Black Bamboo a focal point of any garden, screening unwanted views.

Temple Bamboo

Mature Height: 16 - 25 ft. Cane Diameter: 1 ½ inches

Hardiness: -10°F USDA Zones 6 - 10

Semiarundinaria Fastuosa means “tall and stately” because with Temple Bamboo the leaves grow closely to the culm. Temple Bamboo has a straight, vertical growth habit suitable for visual screens in narrow places. The original culms are dark green, and can take on bronze, orange, and burgundy tones when exposed to sunlight. Temple Bamboo makes an excellent dense and tall screen for privacy. It is good for erosion control.

Golden Groove

Phyllostachys aureosulcata Spectabilis

Height at maturity: 15 to 25 feet tall average

Cane Diameter: up to 2 inches Hardiness: -15º F USDA zone 5 - 10

Golden Groove Evergreen Bamboo is erect and makes an elegant tall, exceptional hedge or screen with a fast growth rate. Its canes begin as rich yellow but ripen to a deep golden color. When grown in a sunny location, Golden Groove canes will often turn a gorgeous magenta for a period while the new culms are hardening in early spring and summer. It is virtually pest and disease free and unpalatable to deer. It thrives in well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Golden Groove is the hardiest bamboo with yellow and green intermittent grooves on the canes.

Sasaella masamuneana ‘Albostriata’+

Running/Screening/Container Bamboo 5 gallon $75

Maximum Height: 4 – 6 ft. Cane Diameter: ¼ inch

Hardiness: -10°F USDA zones 6 - 11

This is a beautiful, unique bamboo that stays between 3 and 6 feet tall, depending on soil and light. It can be planted in sun or shade but thrives in shade and is excellent if you would like bamboo screening without the usual tall height. It will grow just about as tall as the average fencing. This variegated bamboo also looks great at the base of all other taller bamboos. It adds visual interest and gives them shade, helping them retain moisture.

Variegated Albo Striata is a good running filler mixed between plants of all types with its contrasting leaves. It is often planted to add more interest at ground level under taller specimens. It is a standout point of interest in any garden and a bamboo you can plant as a screen that will stay under 6 feet tall. As well as an excellent understory choice, variegated ‘Sam’ Bamboo is an excellent container plant for a deck, patio, or as a houseplant.

Kimmei Bamboo has proven itself to be one of the most rewarding and outstanding temperate bamboos, growing in sun and in shade, never failing to impress whatever the location. Although classified as a spreading bamboo in hot climates, it is much less so in temperate climates such as Portland where it is a clump-forming, very slow runner.

Kimmei is an erect evergreen bamboo with slender culms and oblong, mid-green leaves. The many thin golden culms have a green stripe above each branch often turning flushed red in strong sunlight. In the spring it shoots beautiful burgundy canes that turn to gold with a green stripe on the side.
